Upgrade or Buy New?
For PCs, the hardest decision is not what to upgrade, but whether to bother at all. PC prices are now so low that it's often much more cost-effective to simply buy a new machine. A recent search on the Web sites of a few of the biggest and best-known computer companies revealed that 650 euros will purchase at minimum a monitorless 1.5 GHz Pentium 4-based machine with a quality graphics card, 256 MB of RAM, Windows XP, and a 40 GB hard drive. This means that anyone with an acceptable monitor and sound card can upgrade to that kind of computing power for less than the cost of many upgrades.
Crucial to remember in such a situation is that when a new machine is a better option, the old computer can almost always perform some sort of useful work. A computer that no longer stands up as a platform for high-end multimedia work can still be more than powerful enough to act as a general-purpose office computer, an internal file server, a Web firewall/gateway, or CD burning box. (If two such legacy computers are available, consider this option for your lounge area: Most mid tower cases paired with a chunk of plywood make fine coffee tables on which to prop feet and drinks during football games.)
